Disney’s Mulan, Jr. an ancient tale of girl power
Morgantown Theatre Company production opens at Met March 17
Morgantown, W.Va. – The culture and traditions of imperial China come alive in Morgantown Theatre Company’s production of Disney’s Mulan, Jr., a thrilling legend of honor, destiny, and a daughter’s love.
A tale beloved by Disney fans of all ages, Disney’s Mulan, Jr. is a heartwarming and inspiring musical adventure brought to life by a troupe of young Morgantown area actors, singers, and dancers led by Morgantown Theatre Company executive/artistic director Hillary Phillips.
“The hard work put into this show by every performer and crew member shines because the ensemble really comes together as a unit,” Phillips said. “In the months leading up to a show, the kids help and support each other like a family would. They don’t want to let each other down, and that’s a big part of the story of Mulan: loyalty to the people close to you.”
Disney’s Mulan, Jr. opens as headstrong young Mulan rejects the plans of her village's matchmaker, bringing dishonor upon the people she loves most. As her country and its people are threatened by the fearsome Huns, brave Mulan runs away from home to restore her ailing father's name and fight with the Emperor's army, disguising herself as a man. Aided on her journey by the small, mischievous dragon Mushu, Mulan struggles with her identity as she fights to save China and its Emperor.
Based on the 1998 Disney film favorite Mulan, Disney’s Mulan Jr. celebrates the beauty of an ancient civilization while emphasizing the importance of love, loyalty, and strength of character.
