Gallery III: Bridgeport Celebrates Win over Bluefield

By Ben Queen on December 14, 2019

The Indians upended Bluefield for the Class AA state championship by a 21-14 score Friday evening at Wheeling Island Stadium.

Carson Winkie carried the ball 43 times for 200 yards and three touchdowns in the win. The defense, meanwhile, held a Beaver team averaging more than 40 points per game well under their average.

The title is the 10th football championship in BHS history. The Indians, ranked second in 'AA' heading into the postseason, finish the year at 13-1. The Beavers, ranked fourth and considered by many a heavy favorite, close the year at 12-2.

The loss to the Tribe is the only setback Bluefield has had this year to a West Virginia opponent.
