Bridgeport Parks and Recreation was counting on sunny skies and a field of green for tomorrow's scheduled Easter Egg Hunt. Since Mother Nature brought cold temperatures and snow instead, the event has been rescheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at Bridgeport City Park.
According to Deputy Director Joe Shuttleworth, the event is more like an Easter Egg dash.
After a designated starting time, participating preschoolers will be released to canvas the grounds for 4,000 filled eggs. The colorful plastic eggs – nearly all in plain site - will dot the grassy area of the baseball field.
Annually, about 200 children turn up for the event.
The Easter Bunny will not only be on hand for the egg hunt, but will also dispense special prizes to children who are fortunate enough to find one of nearly two dozen golden eggs.
“If kids find a golden egg, they take it to the Easter Bunny and he’ll give them a prize – a little toy, special candy or stuffed animal,” Shuttleworth said.
About 10 golden eggs for each age group (age 4-5/age 3 and under) and will be included in the mix. Each age group will have a designated area in which to find eggs.
Last year, 3,000 eggs were retrieved very quickly, Shuttleworth said. This year, the number has been upped by 1,000.
Bridgeport Parks & Recreation purchases the plastic eggs already filled.
“The company we use utilizes a sheltered workshop as a labor force; providing opportunity for handicapped individuals to fill the eggs,” Shuttleworth said.
After the egg hunt, there will be plenty of time for Easter Bunny visits and photo opps.
Shuttleworth encourages parents to arrive early in case parking is an issue. Children can bring their own baskets or use provided plastic bags.
