Bridgeport Police Department spent more than two hours last night reconstructing an auto-pedestrian accident that happened around 7 p.m. at Go Mart on U.S. Route 50.
The patient transported by ambulance to Fairmont Airport and thereafter airlifted to Ruby Memorial Hospital was a male juvenile, said Lt. J.D. Williams.
He was struck by a four-door Volvo, which was parked in the Go Mart lot near the air pump, facing west, Williams said.
After the Volvo was parked, the male juvenile walked around to the front of the vehicle, sat down and leaned back against the front bumper.
He was sitting Indian-style, reportedly trying to pull a lid off an in-ground gas tank. Witnesses then saw the vehicle lights come on and the vehicle proceed forward, running over the child.
“The car traveled approximately 20 feet, then came to a rest and the driver exited the vehicle and pulled the juvenile from underneath the rear bumper,” Williams said.
Bridgeport police, fire and EMS responded to Tuesday night’s accident.
Lt. M.J. Lemley assisted with the forensic reconstruction. It is believed that the accident victim was traveling in the Volvo and that the driver didn’t realize he wasn’t inside the car when proceeding to leave.
The accident remains under investigation.
“We need to confer and take an evaluation of all the evidence,” Williams said.
