Harrison County Assessor Joseph R. “Rocky” Romano and two staff members visited Bridgeport High School on Tuesday, April 30, as part of his Harrison County High School Senior class tour.
“I have been wanting to educate high school seniors about their vehicle and real estate taxes for a few years now, and the last two weeks I’ve gotten to do just that," said Romano.
While at BHS, which had the largest senior class in attendance, Romano spoke on how tax dollars are distributed and how it relates to the students in attendance. Romano stressed the importance of keeping information up to date in the Assessor’s Office to avoid complications in the future. He also made sure the seniors understood the significance of July 1 every tax year and how it effects the tax bill they will receive.
“If you stay in contact with my office, this will be a smooth process for you,” Romano saidd. “Please remember, my office will help you going forward in any way possible.”
After Romano's introductions, it was then explained how to fill out all eight sections of the annual assessment form as well as looking at Harrison County’s Levy Rate Sheet to show the students how a vehicle’s assessed value turns into tax dollars due. In closing, Romano thanked students for their attention and wished them well in their future endeavors.
Romano plans to expand the project in 2025.
“Next school year, we’re going to make this material hands on. My staff and I are going visit specific classrooms and stay for the day to make sure every student knows exactly how the state of West Virginia’s assessment system works," he said. "This can only help with their futures. I would like to thank (Harrison County Superintendent) Dora Stutler and (Administrative Assistant for Curriculum development) Pam Knight for reaching out to the high school principals on my behalf to set these sessions up and I look forward to coming back to each location.”
