Hotsinpiller Memorial Foundation Makes First Donation to Two State Troopers in Martinsburg

When the James and Derek Hotsinpiller Memorial Foundation launched in 2023, the goal was to expand beyond just awarding scholarships and be in a position to provide assistance, support, and even equipment to law enforcement agencies and officers and their families.
Recently, that goal became reality as the first official donation made by the Hotsinpiller Foundation when Foundation President Dustin Hotsinpiller traveled to Martinsburg to present a donation to assist two West Virginia State Troopers, Abe Bean and Cadin Spessert, who were both shot and injured in the line of duty in December.
Accepting the donation on their behalf was Trooper T.G. Bryan.
The donation represents the core mission of the Hotsinpiller Foundation—to stand with and support our law enforcement officers and their families in times of need. Through our dedication to backing the blue and supporting police families, we aim to make a positive difference in the lives of those who sacrifice so much to keep our communities safe.
Derek Hotsinpiller Fallen Stars Memorial 5K Race Coordinator Ashley Hotsinpiller said she and everyone associated with the race and the foundation is grateful to be in a position to help even though we all wish we lived in a world where our law enforcement heroes never faced tragedy.
“When you are handed something, it’s your choice to let it consume you or you can try and turn it into a positive,” she said. “Of course we would much rather have Jim and Derek back but we are confident they would be proud of what we are doing.”
More donations are in the works and could be finalized by the end of the week.
The Hotsinpiller Foundation began as a scholarship fund to memorialize Jim and Derek Hotsinpiller. The scholarship was established by Jim and Derek’s family to honor Jim, who passed suddenly while serving at the Bridgeport Police Department, and to pay tribute to Derek, who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving with the U.S. Marshal’s Service.
The primary source that funds the ability to present the scholarships and the donations remains the race itself. Registration for this year’s race, which will be on Saturday, June 8, is open and can be done HERE
