By Jeff Toquinto on June 08, 2012

Bridgeport Police officials were busy wrapping up the reconstruction of an early morning accident along Harrison County Route 707 off of Saltwell Road this morning that required the use of life flight for the driving of the compact vehicle, according to Police Lt. Steve Sickman.

Sickman said the vehicular accident took place at 5:55 a.m. directly across the road from the Alcon Plant. The driver of the vehicle was a 17-year-old female, whose condition was not known. Her identity was not released due to her juvenile status, said Sickman. The passenger was a male, at least 18 years of age or slightly older, said Sickman. He was flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital and his condition was unknown and his identity withheld pending notification of family.

“The vehicle last control and hit two trees and then caught on fire,” said Sickman.

Bridgeport Fire Captain Phil Hart said the car became inflamed upon impact and both occupants had to be removed from the vehicle. After the scene was contained, Bridgeport Police began the process of reconstructing the scene to determine the cause of the accident.

Issues such as whether the driver fell asleep, the possibility of a deer running into the driver’s path, or the use of drugs and alcohol leading to the accident are unknown at this time, Sickman said. He said because of that there were no citations issued at the present time.
“It’s way too early for that, but it’s under investigation. Usually, there will be a followup where hospital records are checked for drugs and alcohol. We just can’t speculate at this point,” Sickman said.

Bridgeport Police blocked off one lane of the roadway where the accident took place in order to allow the reconstruction to take place. Sgt. Mike Lemley and Detective Jay Williams were handling those items and were closing their on-site investigation shortly before 10:30 a.m. Dan Riggs’ Towing was handling the removal of the vehcile that had come to rest on a small hillside about 15 feet off the roadway.

Responding to the accident along with the Bridgeport Fire/Ambulance service and Bridgeport Police were Shinnston Fire Department and the Harrison County EMS.
