Off the Shelf: More Database Services at City Library

By Sharon Saye on November 06, 2019 from Off the Shelf

Last column I discussed several of our numerous databases that revolved around videos.  This week let me tell you about some of our other database services that just might meet your needs.  All of these services can be accessed via the library’s website, youseemore.com/bridgeport.

Your library barcode number is required to access many of them.  A brochure is online and available in the library with details and specific sign-in instructions for each one.

BookBrowse is an online magazine for books lovers including reviews, previews, backstories, author interviews, reading guides and much more.  The creators of BookBrowse believe that exceptional books do more than just tell good stories; they leave you mentally richer than when you started them.  BookBrowse seeks out these gems from both established writers and first-time authors from novels to non-fiction.

Freegal is a musical database consisting of over seven million songs from over 28,000 labels.  Patrons are permitted three free permanent downloads per week.  Additionally, Freegal users are allowed three hours of free music streaming per week.  The week resets on Sunday at 12:00 a.m.

The Great Courses Library Collection is the leading global media brand for life-long learning and personal enrichment, with hundreds of courses spanning thousands of in-depth video lectures on subjects like Science, Health, History and much more.

Hoonuit gives patrons unlimited access to more than 500 courses covering over 140 of today’s most wide-spread software applications on both PCs and Macs.  Learn about all the latest offerings from Microsoft, Apple, Adobe and Google, and more.  Improve job skills with in-depth training on Excel and Photoshop or learn valuable social media skills with tutorials on Twitter, blogging and podcasting.

Mango Languages provides training for 63 languages including English, Spanish, French, German, Mandarin, Japanese and even Pirate.  Mango is a wonderful tool for learning a new language or to simply refresh your existing knowledge.

These are just a handful of the over 30 different electronic services the library provides to users. No need to worry about snowy or icy roads, or kids who forgot to tell you their assignment is due tomorrow.  The WVDELI alone has almost 70,000 eBooks and eAudiobooks to download.  These services provide access to information and entertainment 24/7 and all that is required is an Internet connection and a library card.  And a library card only requires photo ID.

The library will be closed on Monday, November 11th, for Veteran’s Day.  (But the online services are always available.)
