Perhaps it was their time off, but more than likely since it was based on a computer formula it was the math. Despite beating a 17-0 Fairmont Senior team that was ranked among the top teams in Class AA as well as among the top teams in schools regardless of class, Bridgeport actually dropped a spot in this week’s MetroNews.com Boys Basketball Power Index ratings.
Fresh off of their 57-46 win over the Polar Bears Tuesday, the Indians did manage to maintain the top spot in Class AA. However, they are just ahead of the state’s only other unbeaten squad – Poca. The Dots are currently 20-0 on the year and are the No. 1 team in the Associated Press poll, while the Tribe is No. 2 in that poll.
Last week, Bridgeport was ranked No. 4 overall in the state. This week, the Indians slid a spot to No. 5.
Ahead of the Indians is the state’s new top-ranked Class AAA team and the leader in the overall rankings – Morgantown. Ironically, One of the losses the 18-3 Mohigans have this year is at the hands of the Indians.
Also ahead of Bridgeport is South Charleston at No. 2, Parkersburg South at No. 3 and Capital at the No. 4 spot. Following BHS and Poca in the Class AA rankings are Westside (14-2 and No. 9 overall) at No. 3, Fairmont Senior at No. 4 and Robert C. Byrd (11-5 and No. 22 overall) at the No. 5 spot.
Bridgeport may be able to bump itself up in the final standings, but will have to go on the road and beat some tough teams to not only move upward, but to remain unbeaten. Bridgeport will visit Fairmont Senior tonight in a rematch in Marion County and will close out the season Friday in Kingwood against Preston. The Class AAA Knights are 14-5 and are ranked No. 19 overall in the standings.
The MetroNews poll , as mentioned above, is based on a computer formula based on the strength of schedule and the opposition played, including classification of opponents. The AP poll is based on the voting of members of the sports media statewide.
