Bridgeport Swim Team topped Elkins in both boys’ and girls’ competition at a Dec. 11 meet held at the Tigers’ swim facility. The Lady Indians accumulated 108 points to Elkins’ 58 and the Tribe boys topped the Tigers 85 to 74. Overall, Bridgeport scored 193 points to EHS’s 132.
Once again, BHS sophomore Randy Keener was instrumental in the victory, outdistancing his closest competitor in the 100-yard breaststroke by more than three seconds. Keener finished in 1:07.13 while teammate Ryan Knapp placed second, completing the race in 1:10.78, more than 10 seconds faster than Elkins’ Ivan Looney-Sanders.
Keener and Knapp were members of the Tribe’s 200-yard freestyle relay which took first place. Joining them were Luke Pinti and Theo Blundell. The foursome finished in 1:48.96. Elkins took second and third place in the event, finishing at 1:57.87 and 2:24.23.
With a time of 1:03.62, the Indians’ Reed Smith picked up a first-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke event.
Smith, Mason Titchenal, Blundell and Marcel Rodriquez combined efforts to take the top spot in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Their winning time of 3:49.35 was followed by Elkins’ 3:58.20. Knapp, Jack Wood, Pinti and Keener took third place with a time of 4:02.54.
In girls’ action, the Tribe’s Marra Johnson, Cheri Signorelli, Maria Lacaria and Cheyanne Rohde took the win in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:52.82. Bridgeport’s Lindsey Suter, Vaughn Vincent, Brooke Wagner and Lilly Madden took second place with a time of 2:03.35.
Rohde outdistanced competitors in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in 1:07.33. The Indians’ Hope Rieser took second place with a time of 1:10.41.
Madden picked up an individual victory, swimming the 100-yard breaststroke event in 1:16.62.
Johnson, Signorelli, Lacaria and Darian Spencer were the winning team in the 400-yard freestyle relay, completing the event in 4:16.13.
Coach Jan Grisso said she is quite pleased with her team’s performance to date for the 2019-20 season.
To finish up 2019, BHS will compete Friday, Dec. 20 at the Harrison County YMCA, facing Robert C. Byrd and Fairmont Senior in a 6 p.m. meet. The following day, the Tribe is in action at The Rt. 50 Swim Meet to be held at Salem University.
As the new year rolls around, the Tribe will compete Jan. 2 and 11 at the Parkersburg YMCA. Looking ahead, Bridgeport will compete Jan.17 at a tri-meet held at the Harrison County YMCA and participate in the Jan. 24 Harrison County Swim Championships and the Feb. 1 Big Ten Championship. The Region II swim meet is scheduled for Feb. 8 at West Virginia Wesleyan College. Qualifying swimmers will advance to state competition, slated for Feb. 20-21 at the WVU Natatorium.
