The Grapevine: Former Clarksburg Mayor Jim Hunt Talks about Cities Locally and Across the World

By Rosalyn Queen on November 07, 2019 from The Grapevine

“Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.”

These were the words of advice from former Clarksburg mayor Jim Hunt, who was the speaker for the Harrison County Chamber of Commerce Breakfast last Friday.  Before a group of Chamber members and area business leaders Hunt shared his experiences traveling to other cities in our nation and the world.  Usually each city shares the same problems but with different approaches to solve them.

Jim had a prepared list of different projects in our county that could be used for promotion.  He praised those who were responsible for saving and restoring the Robinson Grand Theatre.  Included on his list was the FBI who was successfully relocated from Washington, DC and has become an important part of our county.

He encouraged the support of local festivals, especially ethnic festivals like the Italian Festival, the Greek Festival and the Black Heritage Festival.  All of these events celebrate cultural contributions to our county and are responsible for attracting people and money to our area.

Jim is also an author.  His book, “Amazing Cities”, outlines many ideas to enhance growth in our area.  He was introduced at the breakfast by Kathy Wagner, the longtime and well respected President of the Chamber.  She outlined projects that the Chamber would be sponsoring over the next several months.

Even though it rained, the City of Clarksburg held a very successful trunk or treat for Halloween in downtown.  The Progressive Womens Association and the YWPA participated serving hundreds of goblins, ghosts, witches and pumpkins ... to name just a few.

The PWA's food and pet pantry has been very successful.  It is located in the Uptown Event Center (the former YWCA behind the courthouse) and is run by the PWA.  The PWA is searching for a sponsor who could contribute turkeys for holiday baskets.  If an individual or group is interested please call Elinda Carson at 304-624-6881.

By the way, the beautiful dining room in the PWA building is the perfect place to hold your holiday party, a family reunion, a wedding or a shower.  Be sure to schedule early.

The PWA Will beholding a quarter auction with many items that will make great gifts for the holiday season.  Paddles are now on sale.  Angelica Scott and Erica Perry will be chairing this event on November 15. These auctions have turned out to be a fun time for those attending.  Be sure to save your quarters for auction .

The next regular meeting for all members will be held in November with a holiday luncheon for members.

Keep in touch at 304-838-4682, enjoy the fall and until next week “Now You Have Heard It Through go The Grapevine.”
