Crisis Chronicles: It Takes a Village

Around 5 p.m. on Friday, May 30th, my phone started buzzing with weather alerts. This spring has been particularly intense, with frequent pop-up thunderstorms and record-breaking wind gusts sweeping across our area. That evening was no different. After the storm passed, a large tree had fallen across Center Street, cutting power to much of downtown.
What followed was a powerful example of teamwork—one that truly showcased the dedication and collaboration of our city’s departments and partners.
By 8 a.m. the next morning—on a Saturday, no less—our Public Works crews were already hard at work clearing the road, side by side with Mon Power as they repaired damaged power lines. I watched them work tirelessly all day, in hot and humid conditions, to safely reopen the area and restore power. One thoughtful resident even stopped by with coffee for the crew—a small gesture that spoke volumes about the spirit of our community.
Understandably, many were disappointed when the Summer Kickoff event had to be canceled. Please know that decision was not made lightly. Safety is always our top priority, and we’re grateful for the understanding and patience shown by so many.
Then came the following weekend—and with it, one of the most inspiring events of the year: the Derek Hotsinpiller Fallen Stars 5K. The 
community support for this race is nothing short of amazing. As a runner, having every mile of the course lined with cheering spectators is one of the most motivating and uplifting experiences imaginable.

This is why I say: it takes a village. None of this would be possible without everyone working together—our police and fire departments, our public works crews, utility partners, volunteers, and the everyday citizens who show up, cheer, and support.
Bridgeport is a special place. It’s easy to get swept up in the negative headlines—there have been plenty lately. But when you take a step back and look at all the good happening around us, you see a community full of heart, dedication, and resilience.
I’m proud to be even a small part of it. Yes, it takes a village—and I believe ours is one of the very best.
