Off the Shelf: Wellness Events Continue to Do Well

By Angela Spatafore on July 22, 2026

Wellness events have become one of our most popular and most requested events at the Bridgeport Public Library.

We are happy to continue to provide free wellness events to the community!

New events have been added to the calendar since the last time I wrote about wellness at the library, so let's look at what is coming next!

All events covered in this issue (with the exception of Roots & Readers) are open to adults only.

Be sure to check out our online calendar to learn more and register: bplwv.org/events

Join us on Monday, July 27 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. for Monday Meditation with ZenJen.

Whether you're looking to reduce stress, quiet a busy mind, or simply take a mindful pause, this session will provide simple techniques you can begin using right away.

Together, we'll explore breath awareness, present-moment focus and a guided meditation designed to help you feel more centered and at ease.

No experience is necessary—just bring yourself and an open mind.

Thanks to Jen Kelly, owner of ZenJen, for leading this program!

Following Monday Meditation from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., we are hosting Stephanie Bean, owner of Bridgeport In-Home Fitness, for Gentle Joints.

This is a beginner-friendly strength program led by a NASM-certified personal trainer.

Dumbbells are provided and all fitness levels are welcome to attend. Movements can be modified to make sure everyone can safely get the most out of the exercise.

We host two yoga classes led by instructors from That Yoga Studio in White Hall, WV.

Unwind at Evening Yoga on Monday, August 3 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., or catch your second wind at Afternoon Yoga on Monday, August 10 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m..

Yoga classes at the library are designed for beginners.

Yoga mats and blocks are provided, but you are welcome to bring your own.

Want to build balance, flexibility and strength?

Tai Chi returns on Thursday, August 20 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m..

This class is also designed for beginners and led by Michelene Sheppard. Be sure to dress comfortably and bring a water bottle.

Finally, if you are interested in getting outdoors, we have our weekly garden event, Roots & Readers.

Join us every Friday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Weather permitting, we meet in our community garden in the back of the library.

If you have not seen our garden this year, I recommend checking it out!

Everyone has been working hard and the plants are doing very well.

Those who attend Roots & Readers also get to take produce grown in the garden home with them.

Our garden is open to all ages!
