One of Harrison County’s oldest businesses announced today that it has permanently closed after more than 100 years of operations.
Hartland Planing Mill, located on West Pike Street in downtown Clarksburg, released a newspaper advertisement announcing its closure. Its Google listing also says that it is “permanently closed.”
The business has been a staple of the community since 1912. Its closing brings to end a business lasting 113 years.
There was no reason given for the closure in the advertisement. It did give a background on the start of the business in the early 1900s noting it started when “Frank Turner began selling lumber and later incorporated the business in 1917.”
The bulk of the wording in the advertisement pointed to their appreciation of the customers. Those customers were typically individuals building custom homes or needing millwork. Three of the key employees – Steve Turner, Dave Mong, and Jim Waugh – were all announced as retiring with a combined 140 years of service with the company.
There was no information regarding the future of the building or if the business would try to be sold. There was no answer at the phone number listed.
