Bridgeport Work Force Steps Up to Address Areas with Overgrown Brush State Work Crews Unable to Get To

By Jeff Toquinto on November 03, 2025

For those who have seen clear hillsides and easier access to some rural areas in Bridgeport and particularly along state roads, you may want to thank the City of Bridgeport’s Public Works Department.

In late September with some areas overgrown that would typically be overseen by the West Virginia Division of Highways, the city stepped in. Public Works Director Tiny Grimes said his crew managed brush hogging work in several areas around Bridgeport.

“The state had not done the brush hogging, and could not get to it,” said Grimes, citing lack of state workforce. “So, we stepped in and took care of it.”

The city hit multiple areas to make access easier. Some of the sections the city addressed included Route 58, parts of Virginia Avenue heading out toward Briarwood, and some areas along Route 50.

Grimes said staff were initially looking to do work along State Route 131, or Jerry Dove Drive. However, due to too much traffic that did not happen.

“We also did city streets, areas around the lift stations, and plenty of side alleys,” said Grimes, who said photos shown here was the crew working on Worthington. “The crew did the work in the spring, and we repeat it every fall to try and keep things cut back.”

Grimes said if you know of an area when spring arrives that has not been addressed in the past or may get overlooked, contact the Bridgeport Public Works Department to address the issue.

Editor's Note: Photos show crews working earlier this year along Worthington Drive.
