Morrisey in City Promoting State Sales Tax Holiday

By Jeff Toquinto on July 30, 2025

The annual West Virginia Sales Tax Holiday that begins on Friday and lasts four days costs the state approximately $3.4 million, Gov. Patrick Morrisey. And during a press conference this afternoon in Bridgeport, he said he wished it were even higher.

Morrisey was at the Meadowbrook Mall touting the upcoming event beginning Friday, August 1 at midnight and ending at 11:59 p.m. Monday, August 4. While there are some restrictions and it is aimed at helping families with the sting of back-to-school costs, it applies for everyone across the board.

“I want taxpayers to benefit and keep more and more of their hard-earned money,” said Morrisey to the crowd gathered at Center Court. “I think that matters. I’ve always been such an advocate of tax cuts for our people because they’re the ones who are really working hard … That’s what this is about; giving relief to hard working families that are out there.”

So, what is eligible starting on Friday? Morrisey touched on the key points.

The holiday period, minus the state sales tax, includes the following eligible items:
  • Clothing with a purchase price of $125 or less per item.
  • Laptop and tablet computers with a purchase price of $500 or less per item.
  • School instruction materials with a purchase price of $20 or less per item.
  • School supplies with a purchase price of $50 or less per item.
  • Sports equipment with a purchase price of $150 or less per item.
Morrisey was joined by several members of the West Virginia Legislature, a few who opted to speak about the holiday that is about to start its fourth year. One of those who addressed the crowd was State Senator Ben Queen, R-Harrison, who asked Morrisey about a possible modification.

“Governor, maybe we could extend this a few more days in the future,” Queen asked.

Morrisey was also asked if he would consider splitting up the holiday to allow families that may be out of town a second chance to take advantage of the savings. He did not dismiss either suggestion.

“If you are talking about a way to return money back to the people you’re always going to have my interest in that,” said Morrisey. “This is the people’s money.”

Harrison County Chamber of Commerce President Kathy Wagner also spoke. She thanked the governor and those responsible for the Sales Tax Holiday that will benefit Harrison County, what she called “the retail hub of North Central West Virginia.” Wagner also called the Sales Tax Holiday the “unofficial” start of the back-to-school shopping season.

“The upcoming sales tax holiday period is a chance to put hard-earned dollars back into the pockets of West Virginians,” said Morrisey. “I hope everyone gets the chance to get out, support local businesses, and get ready for the upcoming school year.”

Additional information on the Sales Tax Holiday is published on the West Virginia Tax Division Web site at https://tax.wv.gov/Business/Pages/SalesTaxHoliday.aspx.
