New Restrooms on the Way for Inclusive Playground, Pickle Ball Courts Following Council Decision

By Chris Johnson on July 31, 2025

Two of Bridgeport’s newest and most popular attractions will soon be getting an upgrade.

At Monday’s meeting, City Council approved a pair of contracts – both with the same company – for pre-cast restrooms at the Medbrook Children’s Charity Inclusive Playground at The Bridge Sports Complex and the Deegan Lake Pickleball Courts.

The contract for the inclusive playground site is $88,053.00 and the pickleball court contract is for $94,574.00. Both are with CXT Precast Concrete Products, which is based out of Spokane Valley, Wash., but the company’s east coast manufacturing locations is located near Parkersburg.

“This represents the final phase of the Medbrook Children’s Charity Inclusive Playground project,” Interim City Manager Joe Shuttleworth said. “This would be the final addition to the playground which is the restroom facility right there on site, halfway up the hill on the left going toward the back parking lot.

Public Works Director Tiny Grimes and his crew have plenty of experience in getting sites ready for this type of restroom as the city already has two in place at the City Park and one at the feature field behind the Citynet Center.

“We have found in the past that this company is a very cost-effective way for us to provide these facilities,” Shuttleworth said. “Their east coast manufacturing facility is in Waverly, just down the road from Parkersburg, so West Virginians will be building these restrooms as well.

“The site will be prepared, it’s a very quick process once it is completed. It’s shipped in and set down with a crane. The utility hookups are very quick. Tiny and  his crew will put in sidewalks around it once the restroom is in place. That will allow us to finish the fencing in the area and finalize the project.”

It will be a single-use restroom and Shuttleworth said it is large inside to cater to all ADA needs.

Restrooms inside the Citynet Center are accessible to visitors to the playground but the outdoor one will also elevate concerns if a nonverbal child is enjoying the playground, by the time they might be able to communicate that they need a restroom, they may not have enough time to get into the Citynet Center.

The restroom at the pickle ball courts will be similar to the one at the playground. The one at the playground will have a baby changing table. The one at the lakes will have a urinal.

The reason why the contract for Deegan Lake is roughly $5,000.00 more is a matter of access.

Shuttleworth said the site for the restroom at the pickle ball courts will have to be accessed by the walking trail.

“Their normal road-worthy trailer they have to ship it on will not fit, so we have to pay for another truck with a smaller trailer to transfer to once it gets here to move it across the parking lot up the trail to set it in place.  It’s a little more freight cost because of the tightness of that area.”

Temporary restrooms will remain in place at both locations until the projects are completed, which Shuttleworth said should be late 2025 or early 2026.
