Six-Figure-Plus West Main Street Project on Benedum Civic Center Likely to be Wrapped up by End of Week

By Jeff Toquinto on September 03, 2025

A six-figure plus construction project on one of Bridgeport’s most historic buildings should be wrapped up by the end of this week, Parks and Recreation Director and Interim City Manager Joe Shuttleworth said.

Workers with City Construction were on the scene Tuesday morning and are expected to be there for the next several days to finish out a project that also saw significant work taking place back in May. It is part of a project with a $116,395 (plus a 10 percent contingency if needed for a total dollar amount available of $128,034.50) price tag.

Prior to work this week, City Construction has already replaced 50-plus windows that were original to the building. Several doors were also replaced, but in back in May Shuttleworth said it would be several months before multiple other doors would be replaced to complete the project.

“The delay was the result of lead time and supply chain issues as far as the final doors coming in,” Shuttleworth said. “They’ll get the rest of the doors installed this week and wrap up the project.”

Shuttleworth noted that the windows were installed in 1955 or 1956. He added that the replaced windows are flat glass that had little attachment points on both sides. The attachments, Shuttleworth learned from the contractor, were used by window washers who would attach their harness to them and hang from the side of the buildings to clean the windows.

Some of the work being tackled on Tuesday included the replacement of the door leading to the balcony fronting Main Street. The balcony in question is where officials, including Santa, gather for Light Up Night when lighting the tree.
