"The Voice of the Indians," Travis Jones, Gets National Honor; Recognition to Come at Banquet Set for June

By Jeff Toquinto on January 08, 2026

For fans of Bridgeport sports, as well as those at Fairmont State University, the status was secured long ago. In recent days, however, the status got an official stamp on the statewide level.

“The Voice of the Indians,” Travis Jones, was recently named as the West Virginia Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sports Media Association. Jones was nominated for the honor last year but was not sure who did the nomination.

Jones had been nominated multiple times in recent years, but this was the first time he took home the top honor. This year he went up against fellow MetroNews colleague Dave Wilson out of Morgantown, Keith Morehouse (WSAZ-TV, Huntington), and Mark Martin (WCHS-TV, Charleston).

“It’s a massive honor,” said Jones. “Needless to say, it puts a benchmark on my career at an age where you don’t have many to honors to achieve. I was incredibly happy to receive this one. It’s an honor and considering some of my closest friends have won it before, I am thrilled to be part of their circle now.”

Jokingly, Jones said he was the “Susan Lucci” of the program. Lucci, a long-time soap opera actress, was nominated for a daytime Emmy Award 18 times before winning one.

With the win, Jones will be headed to Greensboro, North Carolina in late June. During that month, winners from across the nation are recognized at a banquet. Sportscasters and sportswriters from all 50 states will be on hand, along with latest inductees to the group’s Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame inductees include broadcast legends James Brown and Sean McDonough.

The gathering is a two-day event with the first day involving seminars and classes. Award winners are invited to speak to youngers broadcasters and college students.

“I’ll be available for that. I’m just waiting to see the assigned subject matter and then I’ll let them know what I’m available to speak about,” said Jones.

The second day of the events will be the banquet and awards presentation.

It also should be noted that Greg Carey of West Virginia MetroNews was named the West Virginia Sportswriter of the Year. Carey is a local resident who was previously doing award-winning work in the sports department at The Exponent Telegram.
