A Tuesday afternoon vehicle accident on Interstate 79 near Jerry Dove Drive resulted in the need for a medical transport and a destroyed vehicle but could have potentially been worse.
According to Bridgeport Fire Department Deputy Chief Greg Pigg, a van that was traveling southbound on I-79 and had just traveled under the State Route 279 underpass of Jerry Dove Drive, rolled over and was wedged against the guardrail in the area.
“There was just the one vehicle involved, and there were no life-threatening injuries,” said Pigg.
The situation had the potential to be worse. According to Pigg, the van was carrying anywhere between 70 and 90 oxygen cylinders. Some of the cylinders had broken and the tops came off. Pigg said first responders made sure that it would not be a problem when getting the roadway cleared.
“The oxygen cylinders were removed out before flipping the van back over to avoid any potential problem with the cylinders” said Pigg. “Another van from the company involved was brought out to load the cylinders on them.”
Pigg said based on the damage he believed the van was totaled.
Along with the Bridgeport Fire Department, the Bridgeport Police Department and the West Virginia State Police responded to the scene. The Harrison County EMS handled the patient transport.
