WIC Opens Little Free Public Library on Main Street

Located at 103 East Main Street, WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program provides to eligible families with nutritious supplemental foods, personalized nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and healthcare and social service referrals at no cost.
Now, the local office of the outreach program includes a Little Free Library.
“This is for people of all ages and not just for our WIC clients, so hopefully we can get other foot traffic who can then become familiar with our program,” said Kelly Rolstad, WIC nutrition assistant. “My goal is also to include games and puzzles.”
It is her hopes that the library will eventually outgrow the bookshelf provided by the WIC director, who supports the inclusion of the library.
Rolstad was inspired after hearing older siblings and mothers discussing books while at an appointment.
“We give out books to our kids near their birthdays and before they 'graduate' from WIC, and the older siblings would feel left out,” she said. “I would also hear moms talk about liking to read, but books are just expensive.”
Books have been donated by Bridgeport Public Library and Harrison County Family Resource Network and financially supported by Brainwashed Head Spa & Salon.
“Many are chapter books and older books which are a big hit with moms and older children,” Rolstad said.
Though the premise of most little libraries is to take a book, leave a book, Rolstad said this library doesn’t operate that way.
“I just want them to take and enjoy them,” she said. “The library always has good sales, and I will keep our library stocked, plus we have already had many donations.”
The library is open to WIC participants, but also to anyone who happens to walk by, Rolstad said.
