Off the Shelf: Ways to Help Your Community with Needs

By Angela Spatafore on November 12, 2025 from Off the Shelf

If you are looking for ways to help the community, the library is a drop-off location for a few different causes, and we always are open to hosting future community drives. In this issue of Off the Shelf, I will highlight ways you can help and what the library is currently collecting.

Now through Friday, December 5th, we are collecting hygiene supplies for Shepherd’s Corner (located at 119 Pennsylvania Ave.). Accepted items include personal care items like shampoo/conditioner, deodorant, diapers, sanitary products, toilet paper, laundry detergent, and similar items. The collection bin is located at the Help Desk, and only new or unused items will be accepted. All donations will be given to Shepherd’s Corner. Thank you to Ava and Reese Woods for collaborating with us.

Since 2023, we have had a blessing box located in the back parking lot, and it is still going strong. The blessing box was a project spearheaded by Girl Scout Troop 35344. We accept unexpired, unopened, and shelf-stable food and some personal care items that people can take—no questions asked. Donations are accepted all year long and can be added directly to the box.

We also accept new and gently used sporting gear that goes to the Bridgeport Youth Sports Locker. Donations of sports equipment, apparel, shoes and any other sporting goods can be made at the Help Desk. Information about the Bridgeport Youth Sports Locker can be found on their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100095025181680

The library is just one of many community resources available to help. Information for additional food and pet resources across the state organized by county can be found at the following link: https://linktr.ee/TryThisWestVirginia
