BHS Battles to End as Young Volleyball Team Comes Up Short in 'AAA' State Quarterfinal vs. Spring Valley

Bridgeport’s volleyball season came to an end at the hands of a talented Spring Valley High School team 25-17, 27-25, 24-26, 25-13 at the West Virginia State Volleyball Quarterfinals in Charleston.

During the first set Spring Valley started fast and got a 10-5 lead on the Indians. The Indians battled back got it as close as 14-13 but couldn't get over the hump as Spring Valley pushed the lead back out and won the first set convincingly 25-17.

The second set had major implications for the match. Bridgeport was the aggressor from the start, got an early lead at 5-2 but could not hold on and SVHS got it tied at 7-7. From that point on in the set there were just a few points separating both teams, tied at 17 then tied again at 19.

The teams battled with the set finish line in sight as Bridgeport tried to even the match while SV was fighting to take a commanding 2-0 set lead. The first set point opportunity was Bridgeport's at 24-23 Indians, but the Tribe couldn't get that point and Spring Valley tied up at 24. Then the Indians had set point at 25-24, but again, could not get the final set point and it was tied at 25. From there, the Timberwolves scored the next two points to close out the set 27-25 and take the lead 2-0 in the match.

The third set showed the mettle and grit of the Indians. Spring Valley raced out to a dominating lead. They were up 2-0 in sets and had the third game seemingly in hand up 16-6. It was at that point that Bridgeport demonstrated what has carried them through injuries and setbacks this year in the face of long odds. They started chipping away at that deficit, 16-10, fell back to 19-11, responded and got it to 20-15, and miraculously got it tied at 21. From there it was a dog fight to 25. It was tied at 24, but this time Bridgeport got those all-important last two points and closed out the set on top. The Tribe had life down 2-1.

It would seem imperative that the Indians keep the pressure on Spring Valley by jumping out to a lead and riding the wave of positive emotion to a fourth set victory and then execute their fifth set mastery they've demonstrated for large parts of the year. Unfortunately, that did not happen. Spring Valley rebounded by starting fast, 4-0, then 10-4, and 16-6, and 18-8. But this time there was no comeback, with SVHS closing out the Indians 25-13 and winning the match 3-1.

Bridgeport volleyball ends the season at 32-12-5 pushing the program’s streak of qualifying for the state tournament to 11 with a young squad showing promise for an exciting 2026 volleyball season.

Through the ups and downs of this season, seniors Addison Veigel, Salam Rajjoub, and Samantha Martin demonstrated to the young team what the standard is for Bridgeport volleyball is and what could be accomplished with hard work and determination. Coach Ali Burton and her team have a bright future in the coming years.
