BHS Looks to Stay Perfect as Fort Hill Visits Jamison Field in Battle of Teams with 22 Combined State Titles

Bridgeport looks to remain undefeated this evening at Wayne Jamison Field in a battle od defending state champions as the Indians host Fort Hill out of Maryland. Both teams took home state titles in their respective classes a year ago.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the Bridgeport Indians Radio Network (103.3 FM WKMZ) and can also be accessed on the Bridgeport Sports Radio app as well as the official website for Bridgeport athletics at www.bridgeportindians.com

The “Voice of the Indians” Travis Jones will once again be on play-by-play with color analysis from Chris George and sideline reports from Brent Kimble.

Bridgeport comes into the game at 5-0. Fort Hill is off to slower start as it comes in at 2-2. Both programs are among the best in their respective states as they have combined for 22 state championships. Fort Hill has won nine state championships in the last 11 years.

While this is the first-ever meeting between the two schools, the programs are familiar with one another. For the last two years, the Indians took part in the Queen City Quad in Fort Hill where – as quad indicates – the Tribe got scrimmage 20 offensive snaps and 20 defensive snaps against three other opponents, including Fort Hill.

However, this year it matters. And Coach Tyler Phares is expecting battle for his Indians.

“It’s a program that we wanted to put our team around by going to the Queen City Quad for the past two years,” said Phares on the Tyler Phares Show hosted by Travis Jones. “They have a fantastic program, a fantastic community, and they love football.”

Phares said the 2-2 record is deceiving. They have lost to two big-time programs – both out of state – in Dunbar out of Baltimore and Holidaysburg out of Pennsylvania.

“They’ve played some really good competition early on,” the coach said.

While Bridgeport’s offense is out of the single-wing, Fort Hill runs the wing-T. And the offense is led by 6’0, 210-pound tailback Braelyn Younger. The big back has amassed 577 yards on 54 runs (10.7 yards per rush) with five touchdowns. He had 18 carries for 122 yards and a score in a 35-30 loss to Holidaysburg (Pa.) last week.

“Their tailback is as good as a player we’ve seen come to Wayne Jamison Field,” said Phares.

The passing game is led by 6’0 quarterback Noah Hill. He also brings a solid skill set to Bridgeport tonight.

While both teams like to run the ball, Bridgeport will likely do more of it. And that is not a surprise to anyone.

Gavins Williams leads a one-two punch in the backfield. He has 626 yards on 33 carries for a staggering 19 yards per rush. He has seven touchdowns.

Following Williams is Gabe Martin. Martin has carried the ball 49 times for an impressive 604 yards and 14 touchdowns.

After that, Eli Knight (23-for-208 with 5 touchdowns) and Kasen Baun (15-for-148 with 4 touchdowns) round out the top four rushers for the Tribe.

Leading the defense is Bryson Lowther with 30 stops, including a team high six sacks. John Knights has 22 tackles, while Aiden Gorby has 20.

Through five games, the Indians have attempted just seven passes but have completed five of the with no interceptions and two touchdowns. Graham Vincent leads the way by hitting on 4-of-5 passes for 134 yards and one touchdown.

Editor's Note: Top photo shows Bryson Lowther breaking threw the RCB defense last week, while the second photo shows Gavin Williams on a run with Graham Vincent blocking. Vincent is also shown making a pick six in the bottom photo as teammate John Knight looks for someone to block. Photos by Joe LaRocca.
