BMS Softball Season Ends with Loss to Taylor County in Mid-Mountain Ten Conference Tournament

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on May 15, 2025

SUBMITTED BY BMS SOFTBALL COACH BILLY ESTOK

On Monday, the BMS Lady Braves traveled to Grafton High School (GHS) to play their opening round contest in the Mid-Mountain Ten Conference Softball Championship Tournament. Their opponent was the Taylor County Lady Knights.

Taylor County won, 17-13.

This was the second meeting between these two teams. In the first meeting, also played at GHS on April 16, the Lady Knights defeated the Lady Braves by the score of 21-2.

A steady rain started 30 minutes prior to the start of the game and lasted throughout the entire contest. That rain did not stop the Lady Braves from scoring first in the game. With one out in the top of the first, Mara Beverage singled and Molly Frenzel reached on a TCMS infield error. Payton Fisher singled to bring Beverage home with the first run of the game.

Sophia Humble walked to load the bases. Frenzel scored on a wild pitch. Olivia Fittro singled to bring home Fisher and Nora Martin followed with another single to plate Humble and move Fittro to third. After Martin stole second, Annie Veigel singled to bring home Fittro and Martin and BMS had a 6-0 lead after half an inning.

The Lady Knights scored twice in the second inning. Two BMS infield errors, a walk, a single, and a fielder’s choice led to the scoring.

BMS loaded the bases in the top of the third but were not able to score. TCMS added a single run in the bottom of the inning. A leadoff walk and stolen base and a single cut the BMS lead to 6-3.

In the top of the fourth, the Lady Braves sent eleven batters to the plate and scored six runs. With one out, Peyton Kelley doubled to right centerfield. Beverage walked and with two out Fisher was issued a free pass to load the bases. Humble walked and Kelley crossed the plate. Fittro singled to center, and Beverage and Fisher came around to score. A wild pitch moved Humble to third and Fittro to second.

Martin was walked to load the bases once again and that was followed by another walk to Veigel with Humble crossing home plate. Sophia Rovello singled to bring home both Fittro and Martin. The Lady Braves had a 12-3 lead.

The Lady Knights would not go out quietly. In their half of the fourth inning, they plated seven runs and sent thirteen players to home plate. Seven walks, three hits, one batter hit by a pitch and two wild pitches made the score 12-10 in favor of the Lady Braves.

A repeat of the fourth inning happened in the TCMS fifth. This time twelve batters were sent to the plate. Five walks, one hit, an infield error, an outfield error, and four wild pitches allowed the Lady Knights to score seven times and take a 17-12 advantage.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Lady Braves attempted a comeback. Veigel led off and was hit by a pitch and Julie Hall entered as pinch runner. Rovello walked and Amelia Green pinch ran for her. Kelley reached on an infield single to load the bases. Hall scored on a fielder’s choice. The game ended on an unassisted double play. The final score was TCMS 17 and BMS 13.

Coach Estok thanks Assistant Coach Greg Douglass for his help and assistance throughout the 2025 season. Both coaches thank the BMS administration, the BMS Boosters organization, and the parents for their support during the season. Most importantly, they thank the players for their hard work, dedication, and commitment.

Both coaches wish the four eighth graders, Mara Beverage, Peyton Kelley, Sophia Rovello, and Annie Veigel the best as they head to Bridgeport High School and in all their future endeavors.

BMS softball flex practices will be June 9-13 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. each day. Interested attendees must have a 2025-2026 physical form completed to participate.
