Battle-Tested: Bridgeport's Baseball Schedule Filled with Regional Favorites

By Michael Minnich on May 14, 2026

If Bridgeport is able to hold serve and advance out of the top half of the Class AAA Region II bracket to the state baseball tournament, chances are they will see a familiar face in the opposite dugout at Jack Cook Field on Marshall's campus now that the field has doubled from four teams to eight.

Robert C. Byrd, a team Bridgeport split with in the regular season, is the other favorite in the Region II bracket after earning the No. 2 seed.

The Eagles got the better of the Indians, 8-4, back on April 8, despite two hits and an RBI by Brooks Vass.

The Tribe got payback on May 5, earning Robert Shields his 1,000th career win by a 15-5 final, led by a triple and three RBIs from Luke Rohrig, a 3-for-3 day from Owen Sondericker and 12 strikeouts on the hill by Blake Butcher.

Bridgeport didn't see Region I top seed John Marshall, but did dominate No. 2 seed East Fairmont, 12-2, on April 14.

Sondericker and Vass both launched home runs, with Sondericker driving in four runs and Vass going 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs to back four innings of one-run, two-hit ball from Jax McNally on the mound.

In Region III, Shady Spring and Ripley are the seeded favorites, but Herbert Hoover, the No. 3 seed, fell to Bridgeport on the aforementioned Jack Cook Field on April 4.

Kasen Baun drove in three runs and scored three and Talan Thomas knocked in three.

And then there's PikeView, a team that had to forfeit all but two of their wins due to fielding an ineligbile player and fell to the No. 5 seed.

Bridgeport beat them, again in Huntington, by a 5-0 final on April 3 behind Sondericker's four-hit, 11-K gem as Aidan Dunn singled twice and drove in two runs.

Region IV top seed St. Albans is another team that the Tribe have clashed with frequently, although they weren't on the schedule this year, as is Spring Valley.

Although they won't be in Bridgeport's path in Class AAA, it does bode well for BHS that they beat the top two seeds in Class AAAA's North Region, knocking off Morgantown twice on April 21 and May 6 and splitting with Jefferson on April 25.

That loss in the first half of the twinbill with the Cougars is Bridgeport's last one; since, BHS has ripped off eight consecutive wins.

They'll look to make it nine straight on Tuesday, facing either No, 4 Elkins, which Bridgeport defeated 16-9 on April 20, or No. 5 Keyser.

The Tigers and Golden Tornado get the double-elimination regional rolling on Monday.
