Bridgeport Baseball Voted No. 1 in MetroNews Week 1 Power Rankings

By Michael Minnich on April 08, 2026

Bridgeport was voted the No. 1 team in Class AAA in the Week 1 MetroNews power rankings by a panel of 10 radio broadcasters and sports writers across West Virginia.

The Tribe, 3-1 at the time of the poll, received four of 10 first-place votes and a total of 89 points to finish ahead of Winfield (5-1, three first-place votes, 83 points) and PikeView (10-1, two first-place votes, 78 points).

Bridgeport blanked PikeView, 5-0, in a neutral site game at Marshall on Friday as Owen Sondericker went the distance, giving up four hits and striking out 11 while walking none.

Aidan Dunn led BHS offensively with two hits and two RBIs and Luke Rohrig was 2-for-2 with two runs out of the leadoff spot.

They followed that with a 13-5 win over Herbert Hoover, again at Marshall, on Saturday as Rohrig rapped three hits and scored three runs.

Kasen Baun had three RBIs and three runs, Talan Thomas drove in three runs and Jax McNally singled twice.

Since the poll came out, Bridgeport also defeated Lewis County, 16-3, away on Monday and Philip Barbour at home, 10-0, in five innings on Tuesday.

Sondericker tripled as part of a 3-for-4 evening, scoring three runs and driving in four.

Rohrig went 3-for-4 in the leadoff spot with four runs scored and Baun and Brooks Vass each drove in three.

McNally got the win, striking out eight Minutemen in four innings, while Anthony Julian fanned five in three innings of relief.

On Tuesday, Dunn held the Colts to two hits in a five-inning complete game, striking out six, and added a triple and two RBIs at the plate.

Sondericker doubled and drove in two runs and Baun was 3-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBIs.

St. Albans (7-2, 60), Spring Valley (6-3, 41), Ripley (3-4, one first-place vote, 35), John Marshall (6-2, 31), Robert C. Byrd (6-2, 30), Point Pleasant (6-2, 28) and Nitro (5-2, 25) complete the AAA top 10.

Several schools received votes; Princeton (23), Herbert Hoover (8), Lincoln County (6), Shady Spring (6), East Fairmont (4), Nicholas County (2) and Grafton (1).

Morgantown (8-0, six first-place votes, 96) is atop Class AAAA, followed by Jefferson (11-0, four first-place votes, 93).

Locally, Buckhannon-Upshur received eight votes.

Doddridge County (11-0, five first-place votes, 88 points) is first in Class AA, with Charleston Catholic (5-0, two first-place votes, 75) second.

South Harrison (9-2, 40) is eighth, while Philip Barbour received two votes.
