Bridgeport Boys Pick up AAAA Road Wins, Girls Draw Defending State Runner-Up
By Michael Minnich on August 26, 2026
The Brigeport boys and girls soccer teams tested themselves against the state’s best in their first weekend matches of the season.
The Tribe boys went east, defeating Martinsburg, 4-1, and Hedgesville, 3-2.
Against the Bulldogs, Riel Figueroa scored all four goals, two in each half, as Bridgeport built on a 2-1 halftime lead.
His brother Dominic assisted on two of the goals and Grayson Church and Henley Hinkle had a helper each.
Bridgeport rallied versus the Eagles.
After Riel Figueroa gave BHS the lead with a first-half penalty kick, Hedgesville scored the next two goals to lead 2-1 at intermission.
Dominic Figueroa’s corner kick to the head of Landon Bennett evened things early in the second half, then Church fed Riel Figueroa a few minutes later to give BHS the advantage for good.
The Bridgeport boys (3-0-0) open their home schedule on Saturday against Greenbrier East at 1 p.m. in a rematch of last year’s state semifinal, won in overtime by BHS, 2-1.
The Tribe girls went south, drawing with last year’s Class AAA runner-up, Nitro, 0-0, on Friday evening, then falling to last year's Class AAAA champ Oak Hill, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon.
BHS is 1-1-1 on the campaign and will host Greenbrier East at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
