Class, Region Changing for BHS Cross Country Teams but Competition to Remain Strong
By Chris Johnson on July 23, 2025
When the 2025 high school cross country season begins, it will look significantly different for Bridgeport.
With the latest round of reclassifications and reshuffling of regional alignments, no longer will the Indians be in the same region as heavyweights like Morgantown, University and Wheeling Park.
Cross Country this fall will join the list of sports competing in a four-class system. Bridgeport will be in Class AAA Region II along with Elkins, Hampshire, Keyser, Lewis County and Robert C. Byrd.
The regional sites and schedules are already finalized for this year. And although the Indians will no longer compete against Morgantown, University, etc. They will compete in regionals the same day at the same place.
Preston High School will be the site for the Class AAAA North Region (quad A sports have been divided into a North Region and a South Region) as well as the Class AAA Region I and Region II meets, all taking place on Saturday, Oct. 25.
The Class AAAA North Region consists of Hedgesville, Jefferson, Martinsburg, Morgantown, Musselman, Preston, Spring Mills, University, Washington and Wheeling Park.
Class AAA Region I is made up of Brooke, East Fairmont, Fairmont Senior, Grafton, John Marshall and North Marion.
The Class AAAA South Region (which includes Buckhannon-Upshur) as well as AAA Region III and Region IV meets will all take place at Huntington High Schol on Oct. 25.
The complete regional schedule for all four classes can be seen on runwv.com HERE
Runwv.com also has preseason individual runner rankings up and despite Bridgeport now being in a class and region with similarly populated schools, the competition appears to be just as stiff in AAA Region II.
Of the Top 20 Class AAA boys in the preseason rankings, nine are from Region II including a trio of BHS runners in William Northey (8), Parker Muncy (15) and Troy Zorick (19).
Other Region II runners in the Top 20 are Elkins’ Trevor George (1), Elkins’ Joshua Bodkins (4), Elkins’ Benjamin Tenney (5), Keyser’s Loca Altobello (6), Hampshire’s Wyatt Thorne (10) and Lewis County’s Brody Skinner (18).
On the girls side, six of the Top 20 runners are in Region II including Bridgeport’s Mikaela DeMoss at No. 5 and Ash McBrayer at No. 13.
Also in the Top 20 are Elkins’ Emilia Tenney (2) Elkins’ Julia Biola (7), Hampshire’s Bailey Nichols (10) and Keyser’s Ava Barrick (12).
