Indians Maintain Top Class AAA Spot in MetroNews Prep Football Poll with Heritage of Virginia Set to Visit

After the first week of West Virginia High School football action, Bridgeport High School remained in the top spot of the MetroNews Prep Football Power Rankings.
The Indians, the only unanimous choice in the preseason poll of 20 radio broadcasters and sports writers across the state, remained as the 
only number one selection receiving all 20 first place votes.

Bridgeport opened the season with a 62-14 win at Buckhannon-Upshur. This week, however, things could be a little bit more interesting.
For the first time in school history, BHS will play host to Heritage High School out of Lynchburg, Virginia. The Pioneers visit Harrison County with a 1-0 record with a 41-7 victory against Fleming High School. HHS also won nine games last year, making it to the Virginia state playoffs.
The Tribe is trailed by Princeton (1-0, 28-7 over Capital) in second in Class AAA and followed by Fairmont Senior. The No. 3 Polar Bears had a bye last week and will open at home this week against Robert C. Byrd.
Nitro (1-0) is ranked fourth and Herbert Hoover (0-1) is fifth. HHHS fell to Independence 37-34 last week.
Future BHS foe Spring Valley is at No. 8 after falling to George Washington 27-7 in the opener. Two Big 10 teams are ranked as North Marion comes in at No. 6 with a 27-0 win against East Fairmont and Elkins is No. 9 with a 54-21 win versus Lincoln.
Robert C. Byrd is in the “receiving votes” portion of the Class AAA standings.
In Class AAAA, Martinsburg took 14 of the first-place votes after falling to the Camden, NJ Panthers 28-0. This week, the Bulldogs visit No. 2 Huntington in arguably the biggest game in the state. Huntington also fell in its opener to Oakland out of Tennessee by a 49-0 score.
Independence is a narrow choice at No. 1 in Class AA with 10 first place votes following the win against Herbert Hoover. Frankfort, last week’s top-ranked ‘AA’ team is in second with nine first place votes.
Philip Barbour, a future Bridgeport foe, is ranked No. 8. The Colts beat Grafton 23-0 and visit Buckhannon-Upshur this week.
Wheeling Central remained first in Class A with 15 first place votes. The team beat Union Local out of Ohio by a 25-19 score.
