Class AAA No. 3 Bridgeport (5-0) extended one of the state’s most impressive records with Friday’s 77-6 victory against Robert C. Byrd (2-3).
With the win the Indians extended their streak of non-losing seasons to 58 seasons. The Class AAA defending state champions also extended their overall win streak to 19 games.
The 77 points scored by the Indians ties the record for most in a single game, previously set in 2024 against Buckhannon-Upshur.
The 77 points are also the most allowed in RCB history. Bridgeport now leads the all-time series against RCB 30-5.
“I’m happy with the kids’ effort, I thought they played hard,” BHS coach Tyler Phares said. “There’s things we can get better at for sure.
“The defense was great. Coach (Casey) Stewart has done a fantastic job getting those guys up to par and get a little better each week.”
The Indians started fast and never looked back as Gavin Williams returned the opening kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown. He booted the PAT kick to make it 7-0.
Williams nearly blocked a punt after the BHS defense forced a three-and-out for the Eagles’ offense. Graham Vincent fielded the punt and returned it 18 yards. Aiden Gorby had a big 22-yard run on third down before Eli Knight took it the final 6 yards for the touchdown.
Knight later added a 3-yard touchdown run. Kasen Baun had first-half touchdown runs of 23 and 6 yards, respectively.
Bridgeport’s other two first-half touchdowns were of the big-play variety and Graham Vincent had a hand in both.
After the BHS defense forced another three-and-out, Vincent threw a 63-yard touchdown pass to Sean Veltri.
The Eagles put together their best drive of the half, moving the ball from their own 20 to the BHS red zone, converting a pair of fourth-down conversions along the way. However, on fourth-and-8 with the ball snapped from the BHS 14, Vincent intercepted a pass and returned it 98 yards for a touchdown.
It marked the first pick six for the BHS defense since 2021. Vincent later intercepted another pass and the Indians as a team finished with six.
“It feels great,” Vincent said of his performance. “I give all the glory to my teammates. They get me ready during the week.
In the second half, four different BHS players found the end zone on the ground. Landen Gillum scored on a 10-yard run. Sawyer Culicerto had had a 13-yard touchdown run, Carson Bastin scored on a 15-yard run and Zach Hickman scored on a 41-yard run.
The Indians finished with 438 yards of total offense but didn’t have one running back surpass 100 yards. Culicerto finished with 87 yards on just three carries. Baun had 73 on six carries, Hickman had 67 on four carries and Knight finished with 61 on five carries to lead the balanced attack.
In addition to Vincent’s two interceptions, Gabe Martin, Eli Martin, Culicerto and Baun all had one apiece.
Caden Dodd caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Corbin Scheuvront to account for RCB’s points. The Eagles finished with 137 yards of total offense.
Bridgeport will be back at Wayne Jamison Field in Week 6 to take on Fort Hill out of Cumberland, Md.
