Notre Dame High School Names Eric Wilson, a Hoops Junkie, as New Head Coach to Replace Jarrod West

By Jeff Toquinto on July 21, 2025

Harrison County has a new basketball coach.

Notre Dame High School announced today that they have hired Eric Wilson as its new varsity head coach. Wilson replaced Jarrod West, who stepped down for an assistant girls’ job at Glenville State, after 20 years.

Wilson, 47, is coming off of a three-year coaching stint at Fairmont Catholic Middle. After inheriting the program and going 4-14 in the first year, the team won two straight championships.

The gig in Fairmont is not his first. And his connection to basketball is not his first.

Wilson played at Fairmont State from 1998 through 2001 and served as a volunteer assistant there in 2001. After graduating, from Fairmont State Wilson headed out of state. He lived in Myrtle Beach for roughly two decades and ended it with a three-year run at Myrtle’s St. Andrew Catholic High School and middle school.

“When I got back (to West Virginia), I wasn’t looking to coach, but I was contacted and told that (Fairmont Catholic) wasn’t going to have a coach and I spent the last three years there,” he said. “I really enjoyed it, particularly watching the kids grow up on the court. I was fortunate and blessed to start with a lot of sixth graders at a small school and then their worked paid off with the titles.”

For those wondering why Wilson started coaching late, it is actually the result of basketball.

“I played in adult recreational leagues until I was 40,” he said. “I played until I was forced to hang it up.”

The St. Andrew job came as the result of a friend asking him to apply, just like the Fairmont Catholic position. He sought this one, however.

“Once the coaching bug bit me, and it’s not an ego thing, I wanted to keep doing it because I’m going with the boys on the team and am confident in relaying information to help them as players,” he said. “I watched a lot of bad basketball, a lot of AAU basketball, where I saw lot of kids who just didn’t know how to play the game. Now, I’m teaching the game and looking forward to working with the players.”

Wilson said he knows a little bit about NDHS but has yet to meet the players. He said he will collaborate with Athletic Director Claudine Oliverio to do a meet and greet.

“When Jarrod stepped down, it came on to my radar. It seemed like a great place to be,” he said. “I’m looking forward to working with these young men and watching them grow as individuals and basketball players. I’m excited to get started.”
