On a night where the Bridgeport Indians secured the program’s 15th perfect regular season, a school record was broken by a wide margin. Junior running back Gavin Williams rushed for 411 yards as the Indians defeated Fairmont Senior, 62-28 to complete a 10-0 regular season and win a state-best 24th consecutive game.

Williams needed just 20 carries to find the end zone five times. He rushed for 283 yards in the first half and surpassed Landyn Reppert’s previous program mark of 317 yards during the third quarter.

“It is a combination of the two. Gavin is special in the open field. We know when he gets in the open field, he can score any time. Whenever [the offensive line] are doing a good job of opening up holes and getting to the second and third level, he is dangerous,” said Bridgeport head coach Tyler Phares.

“That’s Bridgeport football. We had to win up front. If we don’t win up front, we don’t win ball games around here. We pride ourselves on our linemen and what they can accomplish and what they can do. We’ve got an overlooked group. There’s a lot of people that get a lot of praise all throughout the state. Our kids don’t get enough. And they should. You saw it again tonight. They put it on display. Gavin did a great job. But he’s got to have holes to run through. And those kids, they were doing it with an 11-man box.”

“Yes it is cool to break a record but it would be cooler to win a state championship,” Williams said. “I will celebrate it tonight and celebrate with the guys. But after that, it is on to win the state championship and get a second one.”

The Indians scored touchdowns on their first nine possessions of the game. Click HERE to read the rest of the story.

When Fairmont Senior led 21-20 at the end of the first quarter, seasoned Bridgeport fans were having flashbacks to the 2023 loss to Princeton 73-70 that ended the season.

While Bridgeport offense was gashing the Fairmont defense on the ground, the Bridgeport defense couldn’t stop Polar Bear quarterback Anthony Smith and his outstanding group of receivers.

Then it all changed.

Beginning the second quarter down by a point, Bridgeport scored the next 42 points and won 62-28 on the strength of a record setting night by Gavin Williams who broke the old Bridgeport single game rushing record by nearly 100 yards (previous single game record, Landen Reppert 317 yards) carrying the ball 20 times for 411 yards.

The only thing that slowed down Williams were leg cramps in the fourth quarter.

When asked what he liked about his team’s effort Coach Tyler Phares was quick to the point.

“Anytime you rush for nearly 500 yards that’s a pretty sweet deal,” said Phares.

While pointing out the obvious, Gavin Williams is a special player, he made the point that he would go nowhere without that senior dominated offensive line.

“It was phenomenal, Coach Cole does a great job,” said Phares.

From left to right those road grader offensive linemen are Sean Veltri left end, Bryson Lowther left guard, Braedyn Yates center, Nate Hess right guard, Noah West inside tackle, Wes Conley outside tackle, Tristan Noble right end, and Harrison Hall up back.

Coach Phares pointed out it’s not just the line that block; every back is expected to block with the same passion as the offensive line. “If you don’t block, you don’t get to tote the rock,” said Phares.

The Fairmont Senior offense lived up to its top billing during the game. Anthony Smith passed for 318 yards on 21 completions on 40 attempts and the team had 376 total yards. The Polar Bear wideouts were exceptional led by Rudy Carrillo with 8 catches for 124 yards and Jason Walker with 5 catches for 90 yards.

From the second quarter on the Indian defense seemed to settle in and hold the Fairmont Senior passing attack in check.

“I think it was a matter of getting used to their speed, seeing what their receivers had with their good quarterback,” Phares said. “It was up to our kids to see it, adjust to it, then start flying around to make plays.”

It’s hard to put into words the season Gavin Williams is having. His 411 rushing yards against the Polar Bears puts him at 1,758 yards for the season on only 101 carries. This means he is averaging an unheard of 17.4 yards every time he carries the ball. In addition to his ball carrying duties this year he has an interception from his starting safety position, he has caught two touchdown passes, has thrown for a touchdown, has run two kickoffs back for scores, and he is one of the leading kickers in the state.

This win extends Bridgeport’s win streak over the Polar Bears to seven and is the third game in a row that the Indians have initiated the running clock against Fairmont Senior. In addition to continuing their streak on FSHS, the Indians also achieved the 15th perfect 10-0 regular season in BHS history.

The team has their bye week next week giving them the opportunity to heal, rest up, and get ready for the state playoffs beginning in two weeks. With this win and the plethora of bonus points beating the 7-1 Polar Bears earns them, the Indians have the possibility to be the AAA number one seed going into the playoffs. However, the first or second seed would guarantee home field advantage throughout.
