When the 2025-26 school year starts new West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission regional alignments will be in place for all high school athletics.
The competitive balance formula used the last several years has been replaced by a system based on just enrollment. The proposal was approved by the Board of Control in April and finalized by the State Board of Education in May.
Last week, the SSAC released who will be where in the new regionals, which will be in place for two school years, along with a handful of significant changes.
Golf, cross country and track and field are now four-class sports. Soccer is now three classes and swimming is now two classes.
In sports with four classes (excluding football which uses the playoff ratings point system) Class AAAA regionals will consist of two total regionals (North and South). Swimming and tennis will be divided into two statewide divisions each with four regions.
“I like the new format because it puts some of our non-revenue sports on more of a level playing field,” BHS Athletic Director and Assistant Principal Tom Sears said.
In softball, volleyball, boys basketball, girls basketball, baseball, cheer, track and field, golf, cross country, boys soccer, girls soccer
Bridgeport will be in Class AAA Region II along with Hampshire, Keyser, Elkins, Robert C. Byrd and Lewis County.
According to the SSAC alignments, wrestling and tennis will now be divided into two divisions with four regions in each division. Bridgeport is listed in Division I Region I in both sports along with Brooke, John Marshall, Morgantown, Wheeling Park, Fairmont Senior, Buckhannon-Upshur, Preston and University.
Swimming is also listed as two divisions with each having four regions. Bridgeport is in Division I, Region III along with Capital, Riverside, Woodrow Wilson and Buckhannon-Upshur.
In football, Bridgeport remains in Class AAA where the Indians are one of 28 teams.
