Bridgeport High School’s football team still finds itself at the top of the Class AAA prep standings in both the WVSSAC rankings and the MetroNews Power Rankings.
While both rankings draw interest, it is the WVSSAC poll that is the one the Indians and all other teams keep their eyes on. It is the poll that determines the 16-team playoff field in each class and where each team is ranked.
In the computer-based WVSSAC poll this week, Bridgeport’s 6-0 mark has them in the pole position in Class AAA. However, Princton (5-0) is on the Indians’ heels at the No. 2 spot and Greenbrier East (4-1) is close as well in third.
The Tribe will have a test on their hands this week. The Indians visit No. 7 Spring Valley (4-2) that will have big implications on next week’s rankings.
Rounding out the local teams that would currently be in the playoff field are North Marion (4-1) at No. 8, Elkins (5-1) at No. 10, and Robert C. Byrd (3-3) at No. 13. No other local teams are close to the field currently.
Morgantown (6-0) stands atop the Class AAAA ratings. They will have a major test this week when the Mohigans visit No. 8 Martinsburg (4-2). George Washington (6-0) and Huntington (4-1) are No. 2 and 3, respectively.
Independence (5-0) is the top-ranked team in Class AA, while Frankfort (6-0) comes in at No. 2. Two local squads are next with Philip Barbour (4-2), primarily due to its strength of schedule and several wins, comes in at No. 3. Doddridge County (5-0) is No. 4. South Harrison (4-2) is ranked No. 13.
Wahama (6-0) is ranked No. 1 in Class A. In the second spot is Sherman (5-1) and at number three is Wheeling Central (4-2).

The MetroNews poll, which recently came out with its latest edition, is a ranking bone by a panel of radio broadcasters and sports writers across West Virginia. This week, like last, the Indians were in the same No. 1 position in both.
In fact, Bridgeport has been the top-ranked team and has received all 20 first-place votes in the MetroNews poll since the preseason and through six weeks of the regular season. The Indians are followed by Princeton, Herbert Hoover, Fairmont Senior, and Nitro, respectively, to round out the top five. BHS is the only team in all four classes to be a unanimous selection.
Along with BHS and the Polar Bears, two more Big 10 Conference teams are ranked. North Marion is at No. 6 and Elkins comes in at No. 10.
In Class AAAA, Huntington is ranked No. 1. Morgantown comes in at No. 2, while Martinsburg is ranked No. 3.
Independence sits atop the Class AA standings and is followed by Frankfort at No. 2 and Doddridge County at the third spot. Philip Barbour is ranked No. 8 in the standings, while South Harrison is in the receiving votes portion.
Wahama is No. 1 in Class A. In the second spot is Wheeling Central with Tucker County at No. 3.
