The Grapevine: New Feature Nearing a Debut, July 4, a Visit with Don Baldini and Tom Mace, and More

By Rosalyn Queen on July 10, 2025 from The Grapevine

Guess what’s happening? Starting this month, the Grapevine is going to have a new feature.

Once a month, I will read a book and review it for my readers. This will be “Roz’s” Book Club, just like the Oprah’s Book Club, but only it will be ours. Hers started in 1996 and is still going strong except for a one-year hiatus when it became too hard for her to work it into her work schedule.

The purpose of my book club will be to select a new novel every month. I will read it and then publish a review for you. The book might be a history, a biography, a memoir, a self-help book or even a child’s book. Most likely it will be a novel, and it will probably not be a mystery.

The good thing is that you do not have to join my club, just be a regular reader of the Grapevine. If you have a comment, you can reach me at spanishqueen86@aol.com. I welcome hearing from you.

Next week I will start my new venture with a review of “Beyond That, The Sea” by Laura Spence-Ash.

I hope that you all enjoyed the July 4th holiday as much as I did. It was probably the first time that I did not attend a cookout, but change is good. The kid in me still enjoys fireworks and merry go rounds. The fireworks on Bridgeport Hill were great and I enjoyed them with my son Mike, my grandson Ben, and my great-grandson Arthur and a group of other friends and family.

Sunday morning, I found myself at church and having breakfast with a member of my church family, Mary Jordon. When we were just about through, I looked up and greeted Don Baldini. He was having breakfast with a group of his friends and proceeded to bring one of them over to me. Much to my surprise it was Tom Mace. Now Tom and mine’s friendship goes back to over 60 years ago. We reminisced about Bubbie and Wanda Rice and all the fun times we played ball games in the ball field located in our community. And guess what Tom told me – that his wife, Mary Ann, reads the Grapevine.

Enjoy the summer, stay cool and until next week, “Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine.”
