The Grapevine: PWA Stepping Up to Provide Cancer Patients Treated at UHC with Monthly Food Baskets

By Rosalyn Queen on June 19, 2025 from The Grapevine

The Progressive Women’s Association has taken a step further in expanding its services through its food bank. Th association will be providing food baskets once a month for patients in the cancer center at United Hospital Center.

After discussion with those individuals running the cancer center it was agreed that providing a food basket once monthly would certainly help those patients enrolled in cancer treatment. This new service will be underwritten by local businesses with sponsorship money. The baskets will be delivered to the cancer center by members of the PWA.

Individuals receiving treatment at the cancer center should contact their nurse navigator for information on enrolling in this new service.

It is the intention of the PWA to provide this service to individuals who are facing a difficult time in fighting cancer. The PWA hopes that this will help soften the burden of fighting cancer.

The PWA maintains a food bank at their current residence at 305 Washington Street in Clarksburg. It is open every Thursday and Friday to serve individuals needing help. They also have a pet pantry for individuals who need food for their pets.

The pantries receive much assistance from local individuals and businesses. This assistance helps to maintain a variety of food for those in need. If you need assistance, please call 304-624-6885 and make an appointment to receive your order.

The Progressive Women’s Association’s mission is to empower women by providing programs in Harrison County. They will be presenting another sign language class and arrangements are being made to present a CPR class and training on administering Narcan. It’s popular Women of Distinction program is now entering its eleventh year.

Anyone interested in joining the PWA should contact the office for more information.

Stay cool, stay healthy and happy and until next week “Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine.”
