As Autumn Unfolds upon Almost Heaven, Department of Tourism Releases its Third Fall Foliage Update

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on October 01, 2025

Autumn continues to spread through the Mountain State as the West Virginia Department of Tourism releases the third fall foliage update of the season. Here in West Virginia, even the drive is part of the adventure, with bursts of crimson and gold awaiting around every bend. Thanks to recent rainfall, breathtaking autumn hues have made their way into many regions of the state.

“Unbelievable fall color can now be seen almost anywhere in Almost Heaven,” said West Virginia Department of Tourism Secretary Chelsea Ruby. “Enjoy the vibrant foliage with a scenic ride along our iconic country roads. From outdoor adventure to local fall flavor, this week’s itinerary has something for everyone.”

“Dolly Sods and Spruce Knob are nearing their peak, featuring vibrant reds, yellows, and oranges among the evergreens,” said West Virginia Division of Forestry Director Jeremy Jones. ”Lost River State Park is also beginning to showcase delightful color. The Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad offers a stunning ride through prime viewing conditions, displaying a mix of foliage along the South Branch, where Bald Eagles are often spotted.”

Leaf-Peeping Itinerary of the Week

  • Witness a stunning autumn sunrise atop Cranny Crow Overlook at Lost River State Park
  • Refuel with delicious wood-fired pies and local brews at Lost & Found Pizza & Provisions
  • Witness dazzling fall hues as you travel iconic country roads to the town of Romney
  • Take an Almost Heaven scenic train ride aboard the Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad. Keep an eye out for bald eagles along the way!
  • Stay overnight in Hampshire County
  • Start your day with made-from-scratch breakfast and seasonal drink at Wild Roots Cafe & Co.
  • Explore the endless autumn oasis that is Dolly Sods Wilderness. Hike or bike the multitude of trails or simply enjoy a picnic lunch amidst the foliage.
  • Continue on to Spruce Knob, the highest point in West Virginia, and catch a glimpse of fall color from above the clouds
