Deegan Lake has New Pier, Boat Dock and It is Back in Use after City Parks and Recreation Installation

By Jeff Toquinto on August 26, 2025

For those visiting Deegan Lake recently, they may have noticed something different. And unlike this time last year, it is a good thing.
The handicap accessible fishing pier and boat dock that was removed last year at Deegan Lake that was removed when water levels sunk and multiple issues with the pier were discovered has now been replaced.

Workers from Bridgeport Parks and Recreation last week got everything put back in place with what is essentially a brand-new pier.

“We replaced the whole thing,” said Bridgeport Interim City Manager and Parks and Recreation Director Joe Shuttleworth. “Some of the pieces were cracking and falling apart when we removed it last year repairs so eventually we put in all new pieces.”

Removing the pier would have typically been extremely difficult. However, when the water levels went low due to the drought and leak at the dam, dredging the area around it made it an easier and more feasible task.

“Staff was digging around in that area so we took advantage of the opportunity to fix it,” Shuttleworth said.

The recent hot weather, along with the completion of the repairs, allowed city staff to finally get it back in place for use by the community.

“The guys have to get in the water a little bit to make the replacement. We needed to be sure the water was warmed up enough to get things going and that recently happened along with taking care of a lot of other chores that have to be addressed throughout the summer,” said Shuttleworth.

Individuals were already taking advantage of the ramp at Deegan Lake. Deegan Lake is open to the public.

Editor's Note: Top photo shows city staff putting in the dock, while the bottom photo shows an individual enjoying some time on it earlier this month.
