West Virginia Tourism Department's Guide to a Perfect Summer Weekend in Breathtaking Harpers Ferry

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on July 05, 2026

Looking for that perfect summer weekend trip in the Mountain State? If so, the West Virginia Department of Tourism has a trip, and pointers on what to do, to satisfy the need.

Below is a guide to visit Harpers Ferry.

Friday Evening – Arrive in Town
Less than two hours away from both the DC and Baltimore areas, Harpers Ferry may be a closer getaway than you think. After making the journey, take some time to explore the aged streets filled with shops, cafes and stunning views of the mountains. When the sun begins to set, stop at The Rabbit Hole for dinner to enjoy their fish and chips or braised short ribs. With a cozy atmosphere and crafty menu, it is the perfect way to begin your weekend!

Friday Night – Ghost Tour
As night falls over the historic town, Harpers Ferry becomes more atmospheric. Join one of the local ghost tours offered, giving your visit a chance to hear some chilling stories about the town’s Civil War history and reported paranormal encounters hidden within the centuries-old streets. This tour is known as one of the oldest in the United States.

Saturday – Adventure All Day
No summer weekend is complete without spending time on the river. Whitewater rafting offers an adrenaline-filled experience as you navigate the rushing rapids surrounded by the beautiful mountain scenery. For those looking to have a more relaxing afternoon, river tubing provides a great opportunity to float peacefully along the water while soaking in the warm summer weather.

After a long day of outdoor adventures, cool off with a stop at Creamy Creations. Known for its rich homemade ice cream and refreshing treats, it is a favorite stop for both locals and tourists during the summertime.

Sunday – History and Exploration
Before leaving town, spend some time exploring the deep, rich history that makes the town of Harpers Ferry so unique. John Brown’s Fort brings the events of the before and after, of his famous raid to life through detailed exhibits and historical recreations. Walking through the museum provides visitors with a better understanding of the town’s role in American history.

A Getaway That May Be Closer Than You Think
The town of Harpers Ferry perfectly blends history, outdoor adventure and small-town charm into one unforgettable summer destination. From the thrilling river rapids and breath-taking mountain views, chilling ghost stories, and homemade ice cream, every part of your weekend offers something memorable. Whether you are visiting for the very first time or returning for another adventure, Harpers Ferry captures the spirit of a perfect West Virginia summer.
