West Virginia Tourism and History Day at Legislature Celebrates the State's $9.1 Billion Thriving Industry

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on January 30, 2026

The West Virginia State Capitol was buzzing with dedicated partners from the tourism and history sector from around the state as they gathered to celebrate the successes the industry has achieved over the past year. Tourism’s economic impact topped $9.1 billion, with visitor volume to the state reaching 77.2 million, both levels are the highest in the state’s history.

“A big thank you is due to Governor Morrisey and the West Virginia Legislature for their continued support of West Virginia’s tourism industry,” said West Virginia Tourism Secretary Chelsea Ruby. “The investment fuels the growth we’re experiencing and helps our state shine as one of the top travel destinations in the country. I was so happy to see so many amazing industry partners at the Capitol to celebrate West Virginia’s historic milestone, and I’m excited about our future.”

The tourism industry in West Virginia directly supports jobs for more than 61,000 hardworking West Virginians across the state, accounting for one out of every 15 jobs in the state.

More than 100 partners from all nine travel regions made the trek to Charleston to meet with legislators, despite a major winter storm that disrupted the state this week.

Governor Morrisey also unveiled the brand new 2026 Vacation Guide during a press conference. Full of stunning imagery and trip inspiration, this guide makes the perfect tool for travelers planning their escape to the Mountain State. Travelers can request a free copy of the luxury Almost Heaven trip planner online to be sent directly to their doorstep. The new Vacation Guide will also be available for visitors at each of the state’s welcome centers.

“The quality and usefulness of this guide is astounding,” said Governor Morrisey. “From rich history and world-class outdoor recreation, to small businesses and amazing locals, it highlights every piece of what makes West Virginia truly special.”
