He received a job offer to teach physical education and basketball in Chillicothe, Ohio later that year. A few days before leaving for Ohio, BHS principal Norman Tolley offered Wayne a job teaching social studies and math and coaching baseball and being the assistant coach for basketball and football. In 1960, he became head coach of the new junior high school football program and in 1963 became assistant varsity football coach. He also served as head basketball coach from 1963-1970. His teams won four state championships, two in Class AAA in 1972 & 1979 and two in Class AA in 1986 and 1988. His record was 230-71, a 76% winning percentage. He never suffered a losing season.
