BHS Volleyball Team Wins Tri-Match on Senior Night; Smell, Enfield Honored for Stat Milestones
By Chris Johnson on October 21, 2024
Four Bridgeport High School seniors, Myleigh Smell, Kaylee Enfield, Calleigh Morgan and Kloey Martinez were honored before the start of Monday’s tri-match against Spring Valley and East Fairmont.
Smell and Enfield were also recoginzed for two significant statisitic accomplishements as Enfield recently went over the 1,000-dig mark for her careeer and Smell surpasseed 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs.
“Myleigh, she went in her freshman year and served a did a little bit here and there,” BHS coach Ali Burton said. “She had a really good sophomore year but last year, she really took on that role of being that leader everywhere on the court and everything we do starts with a pass so you got to have someone back there like Kaylee that you can count on, that’s why she has reached that number too. She has worked her butt off and that’s a big number to hit.
“Kaylee wasn’t in that lineup as a sophomore so what she has done the past two years, making sure she is getting those digs, it’s impressive.”
The showdown between Bridgeport and Sping Valley was everything one would expect from two of the state’s premier teams. The Indians entered the contest with a record of 42-8-2, the Timberwolves at 32-10-3.
BHS swept the two games, 27-25 and 25-22 as both were tight from start to finish.
The biggest lead in either game came in the first one when BHS went up 17-11. Spring Valley battled back, tied it at 20, tied it at 22 and then retook the lead at 23-22 and had the advantage at match point, 25-24 before a kill from Smell, an ace from Kennedy Wolfe and another kill from Smell put the game away at 27-25 for the Indians.
Game 2 featured seven ties and no lead by either school of more than five. The final tie came at 19-all before Wolfe came through in the clutch again. She gave the Indians the lead for good but Spring Valley still made it interesting.
Leading 21-20, the Indians got a kill from Smell and back-to-back aces from Wolfe to make it 24-20. The Timberwolves came back with two straight before a serve went long to give BHS the 25-22 win.
“Kennedy was big at the service line,” Burton said. “She was locked in and ready to go.”
In Game 1 against East Fairmont, the Indians up one at 13-12 went on a 10-0 run to take control. Martinez was at the service line during that spurt and had three aces. Smell and Salam Rajjoub had back-to-back kills for the final two points of the 10-0 run.
Another 10-0 run for BHS came at the start of Game 2 against the Bees. Morgan got things going with a block. Addison Veigel was at the service line during the stretch and her ace made it 5-0. Rajjoub had three kills and Morgan had one before East scored a point.
Rajjoub went to the service line with BHS up 17-2 and she was still there when it was 25-2 and the Indians’ overall record improved to 44-8-2.
Spring Valley beat East Fairmont 25-9 and 25-11 in the other matchup.
The Indians will be back in action for their regular-season finale on Wednesday with a home tri match that will also feature Preston and North Marion.
