City Council to Recognize EMS Workers at next Meeting; Rec Complex Payments also on Agenda

By Chris Johnson on May 22, 2020

It's never a bad time to honor those in the field of Emergency Medical Services.

Bridgeport City Council will do just that its regular session meeting on Tuedsay, May 26 with a proclamation recognizing National EMS Week. The meeting is on Tuesday rather than the usual Monday in observance of Memorial Day.

"The national week was actually this week (May 17-23) but with the way our meetings fall we couldn't have the proclamation until this meeting," Bridgeport Mayor Andy Lang said. "But absolutely it's always great to honor them, especially with everything that is going on around us right now.

"Nobody realizes how important the police are until you need the police. Nobody realizes how important an ambulance is until you need an ambulance."

Tuesday's meeting will be the third consecutive one for Council that is done virtually in an effort to practice safe social distancing and other guidelines in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Lang did say that he is hopeful that the meetings can return to normal in-person in the chamber halls format in June with some social distancing modifications in place.

Once again, anyone from the public will access to the chamber halls during the public forum portion of the meeting.

One piece of unfinished business will be taken care of on Tuesday and it is basically a formality with the first reading of an ordinace establishing the grade/step salary schedule for City employees, effective June 12 for 2021.

The first two orders of new business on the agenda will both center around the Bridgeport Indoor Sports and Recreation Complex.

The first is to consider and act upon approving a contract with H2I for the supply and installation of installed athletic equipment, synthetic sports flooring and wood athletic flooring in the amount of $1,034,680.000.

The second item is to consider and act upon approving the payment to the Albert M. Higley Company out of Cleveland for the April, 2020 in the amount of $1,346,482.00 for onging construction work at the Rec Complex.

Council will also act and improve on a contract with Henry Lawn Care for lawn care services in the amount of $48,420.00 with a 10 percent contingency of $4,842.00.

"This is for some city properties but there are also some roadways on the edge of town we take care," Lang said. "We just don't have the equipment for it. This is the second straight year we have contracted that out."

Also on the agenda will be the consideration and acting on approval of a General Fund Budget revision.

Other budget revisions and authorizations will be made if warranted as well. Council will also discuss and act on any other Rec Complex construction, financing or management issues that are needed.
