City Faces in Different Places

By Julie Perine on December 13, 2020 from City Faces

Meet today’s Bridgeport City Face Heather Wilson Daugherty.

How long have you lived here in Bridgeport?
I have been a Bridgeport resident for the past 20 years.  I came to the area in September of 2000 to purchase my first home.

Tell me about your family…
I am a divorced mother of 3 boys: My three sons, I like to call them.  I have twins, Chance and Caleb Daugherty, who are in their 3rd year at WVU and are majoring in Engineering. My youngest son, Elijah, is a sophomore at Bridgeport High School. He is a part of the BHS Boys soccer team.

What about pets?
Our family has two pets.  Winchester, our dog, is a 9-year-old Chocolate Lab who thinks he is 1.  Belle is our newest addition to the family. She is a tuxedo kitty who joined us last December.

Where do you work and what do you do there?
I have worked at my family's business, State Distributing Company, for the past 25 years.  It is a beer distributing company which was started in 1937 by my step-grandfather with a horse and buggy.

What are your favorite pastimes or hobbies?
A few of my favorite hobbies are going for walks - especially outdoors at the lakes - cheering on the Bridgeport Indian Soccer team, reading a book, and going to the movies.  I am a lover of theater popcorn. I also enjoy crocheting.

What is your favorite Bridgeport spot?
I would have to say that Hinkle and Deegan Lakes are my favorite Bridgeport spot.  I go there often to walk, pray, clear my mind, or just enjoy the beautiful scenery.

What do you love about Bridgeport? Why is this a good place to raise a family?
Moving to Bridgeport happened by chance for my family, but I am so glad it did. The schools are second to none and the entire community feels like one big family. My favorite event that takes place in Bridgeport would have to be Light up Night.  It has all the feels of a Hallmark Christmas movie: carolers, hot cocoa, friends and family, and the tree lighting; a truly magical evening.

What is your favorite place in the state outside of Bridgeport?
It’s hard to name a favorite spot in West Virginia.  Our state is full of so much beauty.  One of my favorite things about West Virginia is that there is something beautiful to be found in every season.

What’s your favorite place outside of the state?
My favorite place outside of West Virginia would have to be Jupiter, Florida.  My grandmother has a home there.  I have been spending summers there since I was a little girl, and now I get to make new memories there with my family.

What are your favorite things, restaurant, color, music, etc.?
A few of my favorite things are fall days in West Virginia. I love everything about fall-cool days, warm drinks, leaves changing colors, sweatshirt weather. I also love summer days outdoors by a pool or body of water soaking up the sun.  I love to roller skate.  I’m sad that we no longer have a rink.  I also enjoy fishing.

My all-time favorite restaurant is Twins Oaks. It’s so hard deciding what to get there because I love everything. My favorite color is yellow.
I enjoy all genres of music, but I mostly listen to Christian.  I love singing lyrics that are actually scripture.  It’s a good way to commit them to memory.

What’s your favorite childhood memory?
My best childhood memories are the ones I made with my neighborhood friends growing up.  I am so thankful for the time I grew up in: Playing outside until it was dark, riding bikes everywhere, dancing in the front yard to music on my boom box, flashlight tag.  I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

What’s something you would like to add?
Something interesting that most people don’t know about me is that I hunt. I just started hunting at the age of 39.  My dad always wanted me to go, and so I finally did. I killed a deer with a bow at 39 and one with a gun on my 40th birthday.  I called it my birthday buck. I have also shot a turkey.  One of these days I'd like to take my old Winchester - the dog, not the gun - out duck hunting.
