City Faces in Different Places

By Julie Perine on May 01, 2022 from City Faces

Today's Bridgeport City Face is Charlotte Higgins, owner of Higgins Sweet Treats.

Tell me about you and your family and how long you've lived in Bridgeport.
We’ve lived in Bridgeport for 12 years in December. My husband Jared, myself, my older son Denis (16) and daughter Mandy (14) moved here from Utah. Our youngest son Jack (10) is the only one who was born in West Virginia

If you have a significant other, tell us how you met.
We actually met online along time ago. We’ve been together for 13 years and married for 11.

Why do you like it here?
I personally love how green everything stays in the summer

What's your favorite event here in our city?
I would have to say Light Up Night. My kids love it so much.

What about a spot that you frequent?
We don’t have just one spot. During the summer we like to go to different rivers, lakes, fishing spots, really anything with water.

Where do you work and what do you do there?
I own and operate Higgins Sweet Treats. I do everything since it’s just me. I operate out of my home, so there really isn’t room for anyone else.

What are some of your favorite pasttimes and hobbies?
I like to fish, do my own nails, make stuff by hand and, of course, baking.

Do you have any goals - personal or professional - either shortterm or longterm?
My goal is to eventually have a bakery of my own. I would love to be able to hire people and maybe even teach people how to bake.

Tell us about one of your favorite Bridgeport memories.
My favorite memories are just spending time with my kids at the pool during the summer. We spend a lot of time together.

What are your favorite area foods/restaurants?
I really like Mexican food. My husband and I love Don Patron.

What tunes are on your playlist?
I don’t have one specific style I listen too. It could start with Frank Santra then shuffle over to Flogging Molly with many others in between.

What about favorite movies or TV shows? Are you streaming anything now or have recently that you recommend?
Probably Marvel movies and shows.

If you could vacation anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I would go on a cruise. It is our go to vacation, probably because you don’t have to pick just one spot and there is so much to do.

What is one or more of your past favorite vacations?
Cancun with my husband a few years ago. We got to enjoy spending with just each other for a few days.

What is an interesting tidbit about you?
I didn’t go to school for baking and have never taken classes for cake decorating. I have always had a love for baking. I didn’t get into decorating until I had kids. It started out small just wanting to take the time to do something for my kids. Then I started doing it here and there for family and friends. I worked for a small bakery until the pandemic shut them down. I was at home with far to much free time. So I started baking more. I put in a lot of time to learn how to properly make macarons and get better at decorating. People were interested so I started selling more. It just kept going from there. I have pretty steady schedule of orders and really enjoy making cake. I think my favorite thing is bringing someone’s cake vision to life. Most people already have an idea of what they want. But it makes me feel good when someone is truly happy with they order. I try to not only have it look good but taste good too.
