Harrison County Sheriff's Office Warning Residents of Individuals Impersonating Deputy in Ongoing Scam
By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on February 26, 2024
FROM THE OFFICE OF HARRISON COUNTY SHERIFF ROBERT MATHENY
We continue to receive reports that an individual impersonating a deputy is making phone calls to citizens requesting them to pay fines for not appearing for a summons. We want to emphasize that these calls are a scam and are not legitimate.
Do the following to protect yourself:
1. Verify Caller Identity: Always ask for the caller's full name, badge number, and department. Be cautious if this information is not provided or seems suspicious.
2. Do Not Share Personal Information: Never disclose personal or financial information over the phone. Legitimate law enforcement will never ask for payments over the phone or demand immediate action.
3. Hang Up and Verify: If you receive such a call, hang up immediately. Verify the legitimacy of the call by reaching out to your local law enforcement agency using their official contact information.
4. Spread Awareness: Inform your friends, family, and community about this scam to prevent others from falling victim.
