Off the Shelf: Dolly Days

The world lost someone special when Dolly Parton passed this year.
To celebrate her legacy helping put books in the hands of children, West Virginia Tourism, created the Dolly Days Read-A-Thon, and the Bridgeport Public Library is participating!
From now through December 31, 2026, children in grades K-5 are encouraged to read 25 books by the end of the year.
Parents and guardians can learn more and register at https://wvtourism.com/dolly/ or stop at the library's Help Desk to pick up the Dolly Days reading log.
As you complete your reading logs, you can submit them online or back to the library. We have plenty of reading logs stocked and ready, so be sure to pick one up next time you visit!
There are prizes involved if you need more motivation.
The Dolly Days Read-a-Thon is partnering with Blenko Glass for some unique pieces.
100 participants will win a sticker and special edition glass suncatcher, 5 participants will win all of that plus a set of glass bookends, and the lucky grand prize winner will win all the prizes mentioned plus a gift basket full of new books.
Physical books, eBooks, audiobooks, graphic novels, and books in braille all count toward the challenge.
The library has you covered with tons of free physical and digital books to check out. In addition, any book read during a library story time counts as well! The Bridgeport Public Library hosts three story times including Brilliant Beginnings for ages 0-5 on Wednesdays at 12 p.m., Little Learners for ages 3-6 on Fridays at 3 p.m., and Saturday Stories for ages 0-6 on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays at 10 a.m.
While you are logging your books for the Dolly Days challenge, we encourage you to also log your reading on Beanstack (bplwv.beanstack.org).
We are still reading our way to one million minutes for 2026, and we need your help to get us there!
If we reach our community reading goal, we will host a free pizza party, so there are many reasons to track your reading!
