Off the Shelf: Many Academy Award Winning Films as Well as Nominees Available at Public Library

By Sharon Saye on February 12, 2020 from Off the Shelf

The Academy Awards were announced on February 9.  Some of the films played at local theaters, but many did not.  Plus, several of the contenders appeared on Netflix and you must subscribe to see them.

The big surprise of the night was the Best Picture winner: “Parasite.”  This is a foreign language film from South Korea, the very first foreign language film to ever win Best Picture in the 92-year history of the Academy.  Fortunately, it was just released on DVD so everyone curious about this critically lauded film can get a chance to watch.

A number of the earlier releases in 2019 are already available on DVD and can be checked out such as: “Once Upon a time in Hollywood” starring Supporting Actor winner, Brad Pitt, “Joker” starring Best Actor winner, Joaquin Phoenix, and “Judy” starring Best Actress winner, Renee Zellweger.

Best animated film, “Toy Story 4,” is also available as is “Missing Link” and “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” in that category.
“Harriet” starring nominee, Cynthia Erivo can be checked out as can several films that had entries in the technical categories such as “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” “Avengers: Endgame,” “The Lion King,” and “Ad Astra.”

Some of the other nominees are being released in the next few weeks such as “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” (2-18), “Knives Out” (2-25), and Bombshell (3-10).

The following winners and nominated films are not yet scheduled for release, but now that the Oscars are over, they will be released shortly including “Little Women,” “Ford v. Ferrari,” “1917,” “JoJo Rabbit,” “Marriage Story,” and “Star Wars: the Rise of Skywalker."

The library has a collection of over 8,000 DVDs including loads of previous Oscar winners; it is also packed with complete series such as “Game of Thrones,” “Sopranos,” and “Deadwood.”  So, it you are looking for something to watch on these dreary, rainy, winter days, don’t forget all that your library offers.
