Off the Shelf: Quilting Basics

By Angela Spatafore on March 18, 2026

Did you know the library offers sewing classes? They are some of our most popular and well attended events. Our next sewing class on Thursday, March 17 is already full, but you can sign up for our waitlist.

Check our online calendar soon because our April classes will be up soon. That said—we have a new monthly sewing program starting next week that is all about quilting!

We are partnering with Bridgeport’s very own quilting guild, Millennium Quilters, to bring you a free Quilting Basics class. In this class for adults, you will learn the basics of quilting on a sewing machine.

This class will be taught by Shelia Teague and Jan Phillips. If this sounds like a fun time to you, join us on Thursday, March 26 from 1:30-3:30 p.m.

All supplies are provided, and registration is required on our website: https://www.bplwv.org/event/16055874

If you want to make a full day of it, we are also hosting a Sewing Supply Swap earlier on Thursday, March 26 from 12 p.m.-1 p.m. Bring any fabric, thread, needles, etc. that you’d like to swap with others! No money may be exchanged. Drop by any time during the hour. Stop by the library to swap supplies with others.

After you've swapped, please plan to take the remainder of your materials when you leave. Registration is optional, but if you want to receive reminders leading up to the event, you can register on our website: https://www.bplwv.org/event/15894611

We also bring our sewing machines out once a month as part of our weekly Makerspace Open Hours event, which occurs every Monday from 2:30-4:30 p.m..

We rotate among the different tools we offer as part of our Makerspace each week.

The next time we are bringing out the sewing machines is on Monday, April 6.

We provide the sewing machines and most supplies you need except for the fabric and patterns.

The Makerspace Open Hours is a discovery-focused event, so while we have staff available to help get you started, you are given the space to learn and practice on your own.

No registration is required, and you can stop by any time during the 2-hour event.

Once you pick up your new sewing hobby, we offer space for you to connect with other crafters. Join us every Wednesday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. for Hooks & Needles, our craft-focused social event. If weekdays don’t work for you, we also offer a monthly craft and chat group called Casual Crafternoon, which will meet again on Saturday, April 18 from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
